Crusher run calculator for North Dakota
A compacting base material for measured-depth installation rather than estimating loose fill.
Enter your project dimensions
Crusher run settles 10-15% as it is compacted, compared with its loose depth in the truck. Measure for the finished depth, since ordering only that amount can leave the base half an inch short after compaction. This calculator has the +10% extra material setting turned on for that reason. You may see this material listed as Class 13, surface gravel, Class 13 gravel in North Dakota, or 2 inch minus on a ticket. Each name refers to crushed stone containing fines, weighing about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, which compacts into a surface that resists tire movement.
Buy for compacted depth
- For the footprint, measure in feet: use length multiplied by width for a lane, or take the pad measurements.
- Choose the required finished compacted depth: 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 beneath trucks.
- Divide cubic feet by 27 for yards, multiply by 1.5 for tons, and leave the +10% selected. Specifications refer to the material after it has been rolled.
Tons of coverage
| Compacted depth | 1 cubic yard covers | 1 ton covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | ≈ 108 sq ft |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | ≈ 54 sq ft |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | ≈ 36 sq ft |
| 8 inches | 41 sq ft | ≈ 27 sq ft |
Uses and limits
- For a driveway base, compact 4-6 inches, then place 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the travel layer.
- For an economical rural lane, crusher run can provide the drivable crust on its own. It will dust in summer and need regrading every 2-4 years.
- Paver and slab bases need 4 inches compacted in 2-inch lifts. The Paver Base Calculator covers the complete paver assembly.
- For shed and hot-tub pads, use 4 inches over stripped ground and 6 on soft soil.
- Do not use it in a French drain. Its binding fines also retain water, while drainage calls for clean #57 or drain rock.
Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad
For two hundred square feet at 4 inches compacted, the calculation is 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. With the allowance, order 4 tons. Place and compact half, then repeat with the remaining material. Two 2-inch lifts last years longer than a single 4-inch pour, and renting a plate compactor for the afternoon costs less than repairing the first pothole. By the second delivery, drivers can often see skipped compaction in the ruts.
Delivery guidance
- Have base and surface stone delivered together; the project schedule remains on track, and delivery is free either way.
- Begin at the distant end of the run and work back toward the pile. On large pads, working downhill instead of uphill saves a full day.
- Before compaction, mist every lift lightly. Crusher run that is damp locks noticeably tighter than dry material.
- Save a wheelbarrow-load for touch-ups. Road crews use the same material for pothole patches.
Pricing information
Crusher run is often the lower-cost structural material at a stone yard because it comes straight from the crusher instead of being washed and sorted. The +10% allowance on a 4-ton order costs a few dollars and can avoid another half-ton delivery. See the Crusher Run product page for the per-ton price, compare Road Base, and order both driveway layers in one free delivery.
