Think of a cubic yard as a cube measuring 3 x 3 x 3 feet. Bulk materials are sold by the cubic yard or by ton, so ordering starts with turning your project area into one of those units. These tools calculate quantities for 24 stocked products using the actual weight of each cubic yard. Shredded mulch weighs about 600 lb per yard. Crusher run weighs 3,000 lb per yard. Both occupy the same cube, but crusher run is five times heavier, so a calculator matched to the material gives a more accurate tonnage than a general aggregate calculator.

Pick a material

Calculation method

Start by multiplying the length and width in feet. Convert depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12, then multiply it by the area to find cubic feet. Divide that total by 27 to find cubic yards. Apply the material density to the yardage to determine tons. This is the same calculation used when measurements are provided by phone.

Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)

Getting the depth right matters as much as measuring the area. A 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches uses half as much stone as that patio at 4 inches. Check the recommended project depths on each material page before estimating if you are not sure.

Find the right material

  • For a driveway or parking pad, place crusher run or road base below, then use driveway gravel or #57 stone as the top layer. Calculate the two layers separately.
  • Use clean #57 or drain rock for pooling water, wet trenches, and French drains. Plan for 12 inches or more.
  • Put shredded mulch in planted beds. Choose river rock for a border that does not need regular refreshing.
  • Bare or sparse lawn: spread 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil before adding seed or sod.
  • To build up grade or fill a hole, use fill dirt for the main fill. Reserve topsoil for only the upper 4 to 6 inches.
  • A paver patio calls for compacted base with an even 1 inch bedding-sand layer. Use the Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators to estimate each layer on its own.
  • For playground fall areas, keep pea gravel at a maintained depth of 9 to 12 inches.
  • For an eroding bank or shoreline, install riprap over fabric in layers of 12 inches or more.

Common ordering questions

What calculator do I use?
Choose the calculator for the material you intend to buy, since its weight is built into the result. To compare pea gravel and river rock for the same path, enter the same dimensions in each tool. The yardage is unchanged, but tons and price may differ.
Should I buy by the yard or ton?
Use the unit listed on that product page. Gravel and stone are priced by the ton, while mulch and soils are priced by the yard. Each calculator displays both amounts, so you can skip hand conversion.
What level of accuracy can I expect?
The calculation is precise, though site conditions vary. Moisture, compaction, and an uneven base can affect the amount required by about 10 to 15%, so results include a range and crushed materials begin with a small extra allowance. Check measurements again before ordering.
Can one delivery include multiple materials?
Yes. Estimate every layer in its separate calculator, then add products such as base stone and surface gravel, fill dirt and topsoil, or mulch and edging rock to one order. Delivery remains free.
Are all calculator materials available to order?
Yes, all 24 materials are available. Every result connects to the applicable product page with your calculated quantity.
